The survey results from the Police Federation are disappointing to read. Policing in West Mercia is delivered by hard working police officers and staff that keep our community safe. One of my first campaign when I got elected in 2016 was “Behind the Badge”, highlighting the personal cost that can be associated with policing.
My mission is to ensure officers and staff are supported to do their work keeping us safe, in line with our communities priorities. My independent commissioned survey shows that 82% of the public have confidence in West Mercia Police – that is something West Mercia officers and staff should be very proud of.
Whilst disappointing, there has been some progress as “Intention to leave rates” have improved with less staff planning to leave than last year and when compared to the national average West Mercia is in a more positive position. As very small positive in a concerning picture overall.
As PCC I am ultimately accountable for the totality of policing, and I know that the Chief Constable (who is responsible for leading the force) and his team are focused on addressing the issues highlighted in this survey. There is limited progress, but it is clear it needs to be faster and sustained – I will continue to play my part in making it that happen.
